In 1923 the North Girard Fire Department was established. The Fire station was located on Main Street near Rice Avenue.
In 1946, the North Girard Fire Department built a second station on Railroad Street.
In 1954, the town of North Girard was renamed to Lake City. The Fire Company then became known as the Lake City Fire Company.
In 1959, the Lake City Fire Company finished construction and opened the doors to their new station. The Rice Ave Fire Station became the headquarters.
In 2002, the Lake City Fire Company under went some significant changes. There had become a need for a second station. A station which would be located on the north side of the railroad track, which divided the town. The railroad tracks caused many issues. In some cases it would take more than five minutes to wait for trains at the crossing to respond to a call on the north side. Time which could mean the difference between life and death. In the summer of 2002, through much planning and community support the doors were opened to the new fire station. Station 57, located on West Lake Rd. The station houses Engine 562 and squad 577, along with water rescue 578, the jet skis, and all other water rescue equipment.
During the same time as the construction of the new station, station 56 the main headquarters underwent some major renovations. The once single story building was remodeled. A second story was added to house the fire companies Chief, President, EMS, Training/Relief Association offices and an archive room. The first floor which consists of a radio room, treasurers office, training/meeting room, and pool table area was also updated. In 2005, the Lake City Fire Company purchased a new squad, 577. The 2005 International/Lifeline custom BLS rescue squad was designed from the frame up by the fire company. The major thing that sets the squad apart from any other is that there is no through compartment from the drivers area to the patient compartment. This allowed for the addition of roll up storage areas on the driver and passenger side and the addition of a through compartment at the front of the body from drivers side to passenger side. The squad is like nothing you've ever seen. The squad replaced the previous 567, which had served it's time.
From the remodeling and construction of the new station, improvements continued at both locations. In 2006, Station 56 under went more remodeling. The restroom and laundry area was demolished and construction began on a new area. The new construction consisted of a men and women's handicap accessible restrooms, a laundry and wash area and a fill station compressor room. The area above this newly constructed area was closed in and designed as a storage area. These transitions made for a safer and more efficient environment for our members. In spring of 2008 two changes occurred to the fire companies apparatus. With the growing water rescue team and program, it was approved to purchase a vehicle to serve the purpose of transporting water rescue gear and manpower. A 1985 GMC E-one light duty rescue truck was purchased. The vehicle underwent renovations to accommodate the needs of it purpose.
During this same time, Engine 564 a 1973 GMC Howe pumper had ended it service with LCFC. The engine was in need of repairs and the actual use of the truck made the company begin thinking about selling it. The truck went to auction in May 2008, where it sold to a excavating company. Engine 564 in 1973 and for many following years was the first engine out, used as the attack engine. During its years of service it became second due and then served the purpose as a brush truck. There are no plans to replace Engine 564 in the near future.
Updates continue to help us reach our goal, to provide the best possible service and protection to the residents which we serve!
