Commonly asked questions:

How do I prevent fires?

The best way to prevent a fire is to take common sense precautions that would decrease the likeliness of one occurring. This can be as simple as blowing out a candle when you are not present, having your chimney cleaned each year before winter, keeping matches away from children, not overloading electrical outlets and power strips, using caution when burning outside, and stopping careless smoking by discarding cigarettes into an acceptable place. Some of these are so simple that during fire prevention week we teach grades 1-4 how to prevent fires. As you can see many ways to prevent fires are common sense and most fires are caused by carelessness.

What should I do if there is a fire in my home?

If you find a fire in your home the first thing to do is get out as quickly and safely as possible. If you are in a smoke filled area, get low and crawl on your hands and knees to the exit door. If any doors are hot do not open them, because there is a good chance that fire is on the other side. If you become stuck in a room due to fire on the other side of the door. Block the bottom of the door with any type of barrier. (rug, clothes, towels, curtains) Go to the nearest window and yell for help.

If you are able to exit outside ensure all of your family members are present, Do not go back in for these members. You could put your life at risk. Call 911 and report the fire. The dispatcher on the other line will ask some questions, such as your address, type of emergency, are there any injuries, and is everyone out of the home. Try to remain calm. Once outside you should be meeting at your safe meeting place, an area away from the front of the home that you and your family have pre determined to meet. If anyone is injured  ensure they seek medical attention when they arrive on scene.  Keep the roadway and front yard clear so incoming fire trucks can work quicker to extinguish the flames. If there is anyone missing ensure the first incoming unit is aware. Do not leave the premises because you will need to be present for questioning.
